Tai Chi can improve muscle strength and gait balance in sarcopenia - clinical research results published in the international journal " Ageing Research Reviews "
Director Hung-Rong Yen of the International Master Program in Acupuncture (also the dean of the college of Chinese Medicine) led a research team of Integrated Medicine in clinical trials and found that Tai Chi can improve lower limb muscle strength, gait balance stability, reduce the number of falls and fear, compared with patients who do not exercise, can improve lower limb muscle strength, balance, blood pressure, mental state, quality of life, and reduce symptoms of depression; this study was published in the top international journal in the field of geriatrics in December 2022 by "Aging Research Reviews".
The results of this study compiled a total of 11 randomized controlled clinical trials conducted in 5 countries from 1996 to 2022, including 1676 elderly people with sarcopenia or frailty, and systematically explored the effects of Tai Chi on sarcopenia and frailty. The effectiveness of the elderly, and suggested to formulate a standardized Tai Chi training prescription for future clinical application; the team members include: Dr. Chia-Yu Huang, a doctoral student in the department of Chinese Medicine , Deputy Director  Peter Karl Mayer of the International Master Program in Acupuncture, Assistant Professor Mei-Yao Wu from the school of Post-Baccalaureate Chinese Medicine, Dr. Dung-Huan Liu from the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in hospital, and Dr. Pei-Ching Wu from the department of Integration of Traditional Chinese-Western Medicine in hospital.
Deputy Director Peter Karl Mayer, served as a co-author and co-published this paper. He usually exercises Tai Chi. He said: "Tai Chi exercise is also a health-preserving exercise that relieves stress. It nourishes the body and mind, and is suitable for all ages." Tai Chi Boxing footwork can strengthen the legs, improve the sense of balance, and achieve the effect of preventing falls.
Director Yen said that Tai Chi is helpful for the improvement of cardiopulmonary function and the stability of gait. This time, through systematic review and comprehensive analysis, the effect of Tai Chi on sarcopenia and frail elderly patients is affirmed. The benefits of patients, and the development of standardized Tai Chi training prescriptions for clinical reference application, will help improve the physical and mental health of patients with sarcopenia.
